Black History Month Display: The Buffalo Soldiers

February is Black History Month and Jarrett Library has put up its annual display. This year the theme deals with the "Buffalo Soldiers." The "Buffalo Soldiers" were one of the first six all African American Army regiments created by Congress in 1866. Four of the regiments were infantry and two were cavalry. Cheyenne warriors, out of respect for the fighting abilities, gave the 10th Cavalry the nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" in 1867. Eventually all African American soldiers were referred to as "Buffalo Soldiers." The "Buffalo Soldiers" were sent to the outposts that were the furthest from civilization in areas where the weather and terrain were quite harsh. Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, comancheros, cattle rustlers, and hostile Native Americans were just a few of the groups they were sent to subdue and/or fight. What's New for 2015-2016... So Far

As usual there are some additions in databases and other resources as we begin the new academic year. Graduate students and faculty will find the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses - Section A: Humanities & Social Sciences helpful in their research, but upper level undergraduates  may also find it useful, particularly those working on Honors Papers.  It contains indexes and abstracts to master's theses and doctoral dissertations from around the country.  Anyone in the ETBU graduate programs who produces a thesis as part of their degree requirements can have their thesis added.  Anything found in PQDTA that was produced by student's in our master's programs is accessible in full text.  Dissertations and abstracts from outside our campus may be purchased for a fee.  The library will underwrite those fees (up to a certain point) for graduate students and faculty. Jarrett Library 2014 Bucket List

As a reference and instruction librarian here at ETBU, I often find myself lost in the stacks or the archives just marveling at the resources that are available to our students. The sad thing is, many of these resources one might never know about unless they were looking for that specific item and proceeded with wisdom to ask one of your ETBU librarians where you might find it. We have incredible information that many people aren’t aware of – this is the librarian’s lament. Apparently, I’m not alone in this lament as a fellow librarian over at UGL in Illinois touched on the same idea in the post “Listful Thinking” which includes a lovely bucket list for their soon to graduate students. It is a beautiful attempt to help those future alums soak in the value of their college library just one more time before they head off to new adventures (and new libraries).
