Library Get Together for Grad Students

All graduate students and faculty (and their respective spouses) the MAR and MED programs are invited to a gathering on Friday, November 11th at 6 PM in the Heritage Room of the Library. We'll be having pizza and fellowship, and also getting a few more tips on using the library, doing research, and whatever else might be of interest to you.

You need to register - but it's SO SIMPLE! Just go to the Library home page at http://www.etbu.edu/library/ and in the far right column you'll see a calendar and list of Jarrett Library events. Click on the link that says "Grad Student LIFT Party" (LIFT = Library Instruction For Tigers) and you'll see a registration form there. If you are bringing your spouse please register him or her separately so we can get an accurate count.

Welcome to the 2010-2011 Academic Year at Jarrett Library

Welcome to all our new students and welcome back to all our returning students. We hope you had a healthy and productive summer!

Big news for the coming year. Beginning on Sunday, August 29th, the hours of Jarrett Library will be extended to midnight, Sunday-Thursday nights! We hope you'll take advantage of this time!

Other news - recent graduate Jeremy Closs will be joining the regular staff as our weekend circulation supervisor, working the front desks Saturdays and Sundays. We're grateful to have Jeremy helping us out this year!

No other major changes in the library though several of our electronic resources have undergone extensive "remodeling" of their interfaces. You'll see the biggest changes in the EBSCOhost databases - if you have any questions please ask for help at the reference desk, by phone, by email, via online chat (see the library home page) or through LibAnswers.

What Do We Do in the Library During the Summer?

As you might imagine, things are pretty quiet in Jarrett Library during the summer. Now that the academic year is over with and May term has ended we have approximately 10 weeks when we lock the front doors and catch up on all the paperwork and activities we didn't get to do from August through May! Occasionally we even get to get ahead and begin preparing for the return of everyone in August.

One of the major things we do is try to finish up our usage statistics so we can run the final reports and find out how many of our resources (books and e-books, journals and e-journsl, DVDs and streaming videos, etc.) were used during the previous year. Books that are checked out or renewed are done - the system takes care of that as you check things in and out. However, we have to input statistical information from our vendors so we know how many times an article was accessed from say, Victorian Literature and Culture or Journal for the Study of the New Testament. It usually takes us through mid-July to get all the stats input, but once we do we're able to run reports. It's tedious while we're doing the inputting, but great when it's over with and we run reports that give us really great information on how you use the collections.

Over the course of the summer we'll share other activities we work on during the summer, but for now hope you're staying cool and having a great time wherever you are!

Pi Sig Fraternity Teams With Library For "Don't Walk Alone"

Pi Sig fraternity will begin a new service during "Open All Night" (April 25th, 4:00 PM - April 29th, 4:30 PM) called "Don't Walk Alone" for female students.

Member of Pi Sig, with the assistance of members of .COM and other organizations, will walk girls between their dorms and Jarrett Library from 8:00 PM - 8:00 AM each evening of "Open All Night".

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to another semester at ETBU and another semester of information seeking in Jarrett Library.

There are a few new things to be watching for in the Library. Last semester we introduced LibGuides, and many of the old static web pages have been converted over to LibGuides because they're easier to use and have a lot of bells and whistles we can add to your research experience. Some LibGuides are being developed for specific classes and we're also adding pathfinders and guides to assist you with basic research skills such as searching databases effectively or evaluating the sources that you use for your papers or presentations. We're even developing a few video tutorials that will help you learn how to use specific sources in a more efficient way - TigerCat will be one of the first ones completed.

This semester we'll be introducing LibAnswers which will allow you to type in a question you have about the library - anything about the library is fair game - policies, collections, how to use a resource. Then a member of the library staff will answer that question for you. If it's a question that would be pertinent for a lot of people we'll post it publicly - then the next time someone asks that same question the answer will already be waiting for them. It's a really cool system and will be partnered with LibGuides. We hope this will be one way that we can assist the students, faculty and staff with questions - whether in the library or outside of the library.

Another option you may have noticed toward the end of last year was that we now have a chat box set up on the Library home page (http://www.etbu.edu/Library/). When you bring up that page check to see if we're online - if we are just type in a question and someone will get to you as soon as possible. Be patient with us though - sometimes we get busy and don't realize that little bell ringing in the background is telling us that you're trying to chat with us! In addition to the home page the chat box will also appear in LibAnswers and in some of the LibGuides.

Remember - if you have to do research this semester start early! If you need help with that research don't forget to Ask a Librarian either in person, on the phone, by email, through chat, or now through LibAnswers!

Student Workers of the Month - September/October 2009

Tiffany Blalock
Tiffany Blalock is the daughter of Tommy and Pat Blalock. Tiffany was born in Conroe, Texas but grew up in Livingston, Texas. Tiffany has six siblings and 15 nieces and nephews. Tiffany is an Elementary Education major with a minor in mathematics. Tiffany is apart of the Student Activities Board and participates in intermurals. Tiffany love ETBU and thanks God so much for bringing her here. In her free time she likes to watch movies, hang out with her friends and take naps.

John Christopher Williams III
My name is John Christopher Williams III; I was born in Plain Dealing, La. I am the son of John & Martha Williams. I come from a family of 6 children. At age 10, I realized that it takes hard work and faith to be successful. When I was 12 years old, I started my own lawn service business. This business was quiet profitable. I conducted this business every summer until I graduated. I would like to think that I inherited my ambition from my mother and my hard working skills from my father. In 2005, I attended Bossier Parish Community College to study theatre, where I received my Associates in Theatre and a certificate in technical theatre. Bossier Parish Community College is where I begin to make the transition from a boy to a man. I study hard at BPCC and enhanced my knowledge base without measurements. I graduated from BPCC in 2008. From that point, I decided to attend East Texas Baptist University and continue to study theatre. East Texas Baptist University was very gracious and loving to me. I was very active at ETBU I was involved in the following: Theatre, Cultural Outreach Ministries, SGA, BSM, band, PAS, KKY, and a radio DJ. I believe that if someone wants to be successful, one must be involved and be engaged to their involvements. Saving the best for last Jesus has paved the way for my accomplishments. There is NO substitute for hard-work. May God Bless you.

Karyn Solly
I was born in Kenner,La. My family later moved to Lufkin, TX where I grew up. I am sociology major with a minor in religion. I am Delta Pi Theta's service officer and love being part of the sisterhood. My parents are Keith and Betty Solly and I have two older brothers Paul and Phillip. My desire is to own my own motorcycle and be in races. I collect rubber ducks from all over the world. I also LOVE Nascar. I attend First Baptist Church of Gilmer when I am at school and at home I attend O'Quinn Baptist church. I accepted Christ to be my savior at the age of 8 and never been the same. Each day God renews my strength and my relationship with him so that I can be the best servant for him as possible. Each day I try to live out my life for God's glory and sometimes it is a struggle but again, God renews my strength.

Do You Know Your Countries?

Do you know where Armenia is on a map? How about Belize? Macao?

If you're not sure or if it's been a while since you had to identify where a country was on a map or globe, you might want to get up to speed with GeoFindIt!

GeoFindIt! is an interactive game on AtoZ Maps Online, one of the newest electronic resources available through the library. Choose "Map Games and Puzzles" from the menu on the left, then choose GeoFindIt!

From there choose a region of the world. When the blank map of that region pops up you will be asked to identify a country. Click on the country - if you are correct the name will pop up and it will be confirmed as correct - if you click the wrong country it will let you know and give you two more chances to choose the right place on the map. You can replay the area as long as you need to - and you can restart the game anytime.

With everything going on in the world today it's wise to know where the countries of the world are located and this is a very fun way to learn them!

Hello and Goodbye

The library staff wants to welcome Ms. Elizabeth Bradshaw as the Library Associate for Evening Services. She will be working the Sunday-Thursday evening shifts, so many of you are likely to seek her help as you begin your research.

Ms. Bradshaw is a graduate of the University of North Texas where she majored in political science. She is also planning to pursue a Masters degree in Library & Information Science from UNT.

It is with great sadness that we also say farewell to Mrs. Alma Ravenell, who has been the instruction librarian at Jarrett Library since 2002. She has accepted the position as Library Director at Wiley College and her last day will be Friday, September 4th. A reception will be held in her honor on Wednesday, September 2nd from 2-4 PM and you are cordially invited to come by and bid Mrs. Ravenell bon voyage.

First of all - one extra hour added to Sundays! Yes, the library will now stay open on Sunday nights until 11 PM instead of closing at 10 PM. The library will still continue to open at 4 PM on those days.

Second - for the first month of school the Heritage Room will be closed as we clear out all the shelves and bells! This room is being prepared for use during President Oliver's inaugural festivities and after that this area will be converted into a group study area. It will also double as library instruction classroom when necessary, and also as a meeting place for library meetings such as the Mary K. Armstrong Society or meetings of librarians. For instance - in November of 2010 we will host the other Baptist Academic Librarians for a day of meetings. For the time being all computers have been moved to the Heritage Court or the main part of the library. Some will be moved back to the Heritage Room after October 2nd.

Third - by the end of the academic year we will begin to reorganize the main part of the library into learning communities. In each area you will find the circulating, reference, journal, and audiovisual collections for the respective disciplines - all connected by general knowledge.

Fourth - the "new furniture" is now a year old, and some of it has replaced the old soft seating in the Heritage Court to allow room for the empty shelving that is being moved into the main part of the library. A large number of furnishings remain where they were, so you can still sit "downstairs" if you wish. The old soft seating has been placed around the library to give you a variety of seating options.

Fifth - we are planning some fun (and free!) activities on one or two Friday nights each semester - a game night - perhaps a showing of a classic film. Keep watching this site and student activity announcements for further information. In addition the library plans on other Friday night events such as lectures, discussions of current topics, concerts, and a variety of other options.

Sixth - this is one we're really excited about. The library now has a feature film collection - mostly classic films - which you can check out for up to three days. Best of all, there is no charge like you'll find at a rental store! We hope to have these ready for you to check out by the second week of classes (or maybe sooner).

As usual, we have added some new electronic resources and made some changes to the web pages. Two more collections have been added to JSTOR and we also added the complete Cambridge Histories as well as selected Oxford reference materials. Political Science Complete is now among our wonderful EBSCOhost databases. We also have a new map resource called AtoZ Maps Online and it has a wonderful interactive game called GeoFindIt -try it and see how many countries you can identify in the various regions of the world!

We are pleased to announce the addition of MEDLINE with Full Text and CountryWatch to our list of databases. MEDLINE with Full Text adds nearly 500 unique full text journal titles to our burgeoning list. CountryWatch gives good information about the countries of the world and although some of the information is duplicated in Global Road Warrior for the most part the information is complementary to that database, and not competitive.

Jarrett Library is pleased to announce the November/December Student Workers of the Month. They are Danielle Closs, Sara Gray, and Porsha Harrison.

Danielle Closs

Danielle Closs was born in Dover, Delaware and lived in Felton, Delaware for about 23 years. She graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College in 2004, with an associates degree in Human Services and then started going to Washington Bible College in Lanham Maryland August of 2006. She attended WBC for two years where she met her wonderful husband and they were married August 2008 and immediately moved to Marshall, Texas. They are both attending East Texas Baptist University. Danielle is in the psychology program, hoping to work with youth in some way.

Sara Gray

Sara Gray is from Hallsville, Texas where she is involved with the First Baptist Church Hallsville. Sara's hobbies are reading and ultimate frisbee.

Porsha Harrison

Porsha Harrison is from Lufkin and her parents are Michael Harrison and Delisia Harrison-Spencer. She also has a sister, Brittany who is 21.

Porsha loves to hang out with her friends and loves to play sports, especially softball. She came to ETBU to play softball, but ended up playing soccer also.

She graduated from Lufkin High School in 2006 and from there went to Lon Morris College in Jacksonville where she also played softball and soccer. She transferred to ETBU this semster and plans to be either a nurse or a college coach.

*For safety and security purposes the library doors will be locked at 1:00 AM. Doors will be opened briefly from 2-2:10, 3-3:10, 4-4:10, and 5-5:10. Doors will be unlocked at 6 AM.

Food and drink will be allowed in the library during this time. Last spring everyone did a great job making sure nothing spilled and that all the trash was picked up. Food and drink will continue to be allowed as long as you keep the library in good shape and we'll have a large trash can at the front of the library you can use to discard your paper, drink cups, etc. However, do remember, no food or drinks around the computers - and let's keep our new furniture in nice shape - keep the food and drinks out of that area too. Tables, study carrells, and the soft seating in the Heritage Court are fine. Last year the Business Department ran a concession stand, but that won't be happening this year. We'll see if we can do something to provide at least coffee, sodas and water for a small charge - otherwise you are welcome to make a run out to a 24-hour place and bring it back.

Now, a reminder - no tobacco products are allowed on campus and that includes chewing tobacco and snuff. The only problem we had last Spring was the "gift" someone left us of a cup of used chew, so to that person, give the rest of the students and library staff the respect they deserve by not bringing it in the library in the first place.

Jingyi Chen (Annie)

Annie is from China and her major is elementary education. According to Annie, "It's wonderful to work in the library. I enjoy this semester very much!"

Jeremy Closs

Jeremy Closs is a 22 year old Religion major/ Theatre minor at ETBU. He is a transfer student coming in from Washington Bible College, in Lanham, Maryland. His wife Danielle and he were married recently, on 8/8/08, and are settling in to their new Texas home. So far, the people are nice and the food is good. When he's not working at Jarrett Library or in class, Jeremy enjoys reading whatever catches his fancy, writing whatever pops into his head, or killing his brain cells with television (Heroes, LOST and The Colbert Report are current favorites). He also loves cats, but sadly has too many college bills to get one of his own.

Alison Gray

Alison is majoring in radiology. According to Alison, "I want to be a radiology technician. I'm a freshmen this year from Hallsville, TX. I'm involved with my church, FBC Hallsville, with the youth and college bible study. I go to Journey and Release. I like running and working out, when I have time, with my lovely sister Sara. I don't watch much TV, but I LOVE watching The Office."

LibQual+ Survey To Start November 3rd

For the first time Jarrett Library is participating in the LibQual+ survey. This survey was developed specifically for academic libraries and had been used throughout the United States to determine how well a library is doing. One of the things that makes this distinctive from other surveys is it asks the user what are your minimum requirements, what are you optimum requirements, and how is the library doing. This allows a library to concentrate on areas that are especially important to users and improve those areas.

The more people we have completing the survey the better we will know how we are doing in the areas of service, collections, and facilities. To that end, we will be offering incentives to everyone who takes the survey. The incentives will include an iPod Shuffle as well as gift cards to area restaurants. If you are interested in qualifying for the incentive drawing simply input your email in the appropriate box at the end of the survey (it will not be tied to your survey answers). After the survey closes (December 5th) the system will randomly choose fifty emails and from those fifty emails we will draw for the prizes. Winners will be contacted by Sunday before exam week.

Welcome Back Students

It's been a hectic summer at the library - in spite of the fact we've had no students around! However, we think you'll see some of the reasons our summer flew by. There are major changes and these are only a small portion of what we hope you'll see when you come back in 2009!

For returning students - you may remember the big plastic "bubble" that surrounded the old control room and office near the children's literature collection. These had long outlasted their usefulness and we had been planning for that area to come down for several years - and finally it happened. In spite of all the noise, dust, and general disruption the result was what we had hoped - we've gained a great deal more room.

However, the plans we had for filling that space up aren't quite ready to be implemented, so rather than have a big empty area the university was kind enough to fill it up with some of the most comfortable furniture you'll come across - so the west side of the main part of the library is now filled with comfy chairs, loveseats, couches - even chaise lounges!! Although they haven't arrived yet, we also expect about four high café style tables with accompanying chairs that will sit under the windows in that area. You'll be able to study and even look out the high windows with little trouble. We fully expect this area to be one of the most popular ones in the library - and we wouldn't be surprised to find students sleeping now and again!

As a pilot we will be opening the library at 7:30 AM, Monday-Friday, during the Fall semester. During this time all computers and printers will be available, but there will be no library services until 8:00 AM - this will include checking books out, selling copy cards, sending faxes, reference, and so on. This was the compromise we made since our small staff makes it difficult to do more at this time. Whether we keep the opening at 7:30 or not will depend on you the student and whether or not we have enough usage to warrant continuing. So, if you were one of the many who voted yes in our blog poll last Spring, be sure and make it in during that time so we can keep a count of how many are there between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m.

As a side note, as usual our evening hours will be limited during the first week of school. Although we will open at 7:30 a.m. we will close at 9:00 p.m. August 25-28. The library will also be closed to the public on the first Saturday (August 30) as been our routine for several years. This is the time we will be training the library student assistants and this gives us the only uninterrupted time we can gather them all together. However, on Sunday August 31st the library will resume its regular hours - these will be posted on the library web site, along with the dates the library will be open and closed during breaks, holidays and interim periods.

For those of you who may be wondering - yes, we're going to hold "Open All Night" again during the exam week period. For new students, we expand our evening hours to midnight the last week of classes, expand the Friday hours to 10 PM, extend the Saturday hours to 5 PM, and then on Sunday we open at the regular 4 PM time but we don't close again until 4:30 PM the following Thursday. Last year was a great success, with over 10% of the student body in the library at some point between 10 PM and 6 AM during the Sunday evening/Monday morning time period - and the rest of the evenings weren't very slow either!

Another major change was a complete overhaul of the library web pages, which began in June. Although not complete finished yet we hope you'll find the changes beneficial and the site easier to get around. Most of the major links are now right on the library home page, so you'll rarely if ever need to use the old navigation links that led you deeper and deeper into the library site (you'll still be going deep - hopefully you just won't notice!!)

During the 2004 election the library held a "watch party" in the Heritage Court for those who wanted to watch the Presidential returns come in. Snacks were available, and we had a map where we kept tabs on whether a state went red or blue! We're planning on repeating that activity for the 2008 election so if you're a political junkie join us in the library that evening.

Encyclopedia of Post-Colonial Literatures in English

Post-Colonial Literatures in English, together with English Literature and American Literature, form one of the three major groupings of literature in English, and, as such, are widely studied around the world. Their significance derives from the richness and variety of experience which they reflect. This encyclopedia documents the history and development of this body of work from A (Gemino Henson Abad) to Z (Fay Zwicky) and includes original research relating to the literatures of some 50 countries and territories. It explores the effect of the colonial and post-colonial experience on literatures in English worldwide.

Summer at Jarrett Library

The staff at the library are busy finishing some chores from the previous year but mainly we're getting ready for the 2008-2009 academic year which begins in just over a month!

Students will find a few changes in the library - remember the big "bubble" at the front of the library's main room? That "deconstruction" has been finished, and new blue carpeting laid over part of that area where the old control room and office used to be. Unfortunately we weren't able to get the entire library recarpeted, but that is definitely on the schedule for next year. Meanwhile, you can see how you like the new color and we can tell if the carpet is hardy enough for all the use it will get. Hopefully you'll also see some new furnishings and maybe an interesting surprise or two!

We've already added several new databases to the collection, including another JSTOR collection. One of the most exciting additions is the ARTstor collection - and if the name reminds you of JSTOR that's not an accident. ARTstor is a digital image collection and is brought to you by the same people who bring you JSTOR. Currently there are about 800,000 images from about 100 collections. Although there is a large art collection you'll also find photographs by well-known photographers, photographs of objects, architecture - and lots of historical materials. Just about every subject area will benefit from ARTstor and you will have the ability to download the images for papers and presentations.

There's also been a major redesign of the library web site which we hope will make it easier for you to find the information you need. The most important links can now be found on the library home page - you no longer have to go through several layers to find some of the pages. We've also added some technological improvements, like pull-down menus and online forms.

More News About End of Semester Hours: FOOD!

During select hours of the 24 hour open period (4 PM on Sunday, 4/27 - 4:30 PM on Thursday, 5/1) the School of Business will be running a concession stand in the library. From late evening (approximately 9 or 10 PM through the midnight and early morning hours) ETBU users studying for exams will be able to purchase drinks and snacks to take you through the night.

Food and drink will be allowed in all areas of the library - except at the computers. Due to the potential damage to the electronics we ask that you not eat or drink there. The only other rule is to please throw out any trash and clean any crumbs or spills off the tables. The one thing we DON'T want visiting the library are varmints!

We hope that lots of students take advantage of the library during exams. If you'll be at 1st Baptist taking advantage of their study hall come on over when they close up shop - we'll have just started!

Credo Reference, one of Jarrett Library's premier databases has announced the featured titles for the month of April. They are Notable American Women: 1607-1950 and Notable American Women: The Modern Period.

Both volumes document women's contributions that were previously overlooked in the study of American history. Notable American Women: 1607-1950 covers the lives of exceptional women throughout three and a half centuries of American history. Here are artists, lawyers, reformer, educators, entrepreneurs, physicists, writers, pioneers, first ladies, film stars. Here are those known for their deeds and those famed for their looks -- the genteel and the disreputable, the highborn and the slave-born. Just a few of the names covered are Ruth Benedict (anthropologist), Jane Addams (settlement founder, social reformer and peace worker), Willa Cather (author), Isadora Duncan (dancer), Sojourner Truth (abolitionist and reformer), and Texas Guinan (actress and night club hostess).

Notable American Women: The Modern Period covers the life stories of American women from Edith Abbott to Mary Zimbalist, who have in some way affected contemporary American life. The basics -- the crucial dates, ancestry, parents, education, marital status, and children -- provide invaluable material for both the researcher and the general reader. Beyond these essentials, a brief essay focuses on each woman's life and personality, and evaluates her career from a historical framework. A few of the biographies include Janis Joplin (singer), Hattie Carnegie (fashion designer and entrepreneur), Jessie Daniel Ames (antilynching reformer and suffragist), Rachel Carson (writer, biologist and conservationist), and Bess Furman (journalist).

The final book in the series Notable American Women: Completing the Twentieth Century will be released in the near future on Credo Reference.

Library Announces End of Semester Hours

Each regular semester Jarrett Library extends its normal hours during the final week of classes through final exams. In the Fall of 2007 the Friday hours of the last day of class were extended until 8 PM. This year, due to demand, we are extending both the Friday and Saturday hours, and we are implementing several days of 24 hour building use for study groups or individuals. The end of semester hours will be as follows:

Sunday, April 20: 4 PM - 12 Midinight (Additional 2 hours)
Monday-Thursday, April 21-24: 8 AM - 12 Midnight (Addition hour each night)
Friday, April 25: 8 AM - 10 PM (Additional 5 1/2 hours)
Saturday, April 26: 9 AM - 5 PM (Additional 3 hours)

24 Hour Service Begins Sunday, April 27

Sunday-Thursday, April 27 - May 1: Open 4 PM on Sunday, 4/27 - 4:30 PM on Thursday, 5/1*

Friday, May 2: 8 AM - 4:30 PM

*For safety and security reasons, the library will lock the front doors at 12 Midnight each night of 24 hour service. The front doors will be open briefly at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 AM for students needing to enter the building after the doors are locked. Please be at the front doors 5-10 minutes before each hour. If you miss the door opening you will have to wait until the next hour. The doors will be unlocked again at 7 AM. Only ETBU students, faculty and staff may enter during this times, so ETBU ID MUST be presented for entry. (Users may leave the library at any time after they have entered.)

From midnight until 8 AM no library services will be available (i.e., book checkout, copy card purchases, additional print copies added to account, etc.). However, a librarian will be on duty for anyone needing assistance with research or reference questions.

Journal Holdings Update Report

Many of you know that we are trying to improve our journal holdings list by adding URLs that will take you directly to those journal titles. This is taking quite a while as you can imagine and halfway through the process we finally figured out how to embed the URL for the proxy server so that if you are off-campus it takes you directly to the remote access login first, so even the first set of lists we worked on will have to be retooled somewhat.

The P section has just been completed, and the M section will be next. After that all that will remain are the I, S, and J sections. These larger sections take longer of course, so we appreciate your patience while we continue to work on this project. In the long run it will be well worth it!

Three More New Databases - Naxos Music Library, CQ Global Researcher and GreenFILE

The library is pleased to announce three new databases that were recently added.
Naxos Music Library contains almost the entire catalog of recordings of the Naxos Recording Company. Listen to a variety of classical works through your computer.

CQ Global Researcher is a companion to CQResearcher and takes a decidedly international flavor. Reports come out monthly (as opposed to the weekly reports of CQResearcher) and deal with a broad topic such as climate change, or deal with a specific country, such as Turkey or India. Links to related reports found in CQResearcher are also available (and vice versa). Almost all disciplines will find useful reports in this database.

EBSCOhost now offers a free database called GreenFILE. GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles as well.

New Databases

The Library is pleased to announce the addition of two new databases from Alexander Street Press - The Classical Music Library and Theatre in Video with BBC Content.

The Classical Music Library is a fully searchable classical music resource—a comprehensive database of distinguished classical recordings. It includes tens of thousands of licensed recordings that users can listen to over the Internet. Users browse, search, click, and then listen to the music.

Theatre in Video with BBC Content contains more than 250 of the world’s most important plays, together with more than 100 video documentaries, online in streaming video—more than 500 hours in all. These definitive performances, by leading actors and directors, have been painstakingly licensed from a wide range of copyright holders. They are now delivered to you over the Internet, in a revolutionary new format developed specifically for drama.
For the first time, students, instructors, and researchers can bookmark specific scenes, monologues, and staging examples and then include those online links in their papers and course reserves. Class assignments and published papers will take on a whole new dimension.

The "with BBC Content" component of this database contains the entire canon of Shakespeare plays produced by the BBC in the late 1970s through the early 1980s and originally shown in the United States on PBS stations. It contains performances by many of the foremost actors of the British stage and screen, including Helen Mirren, Derek Jacobi, Ian McKellen, and Judi Dench among others.

Trial Databases - Points of View Reference Center & Nursing Reference Center

For the next thirty days you may take advantage of the Points of View Reference Center and/or the Nursing Reference Center.

Points of View Reference Center is similar to both Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and TOPICSearch in that it is a full-text database designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database provides 200 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument),counterpoint (opposing argument), and Critical Thinking Guide. Topics covered include: affirmative action, cloning, DNA profiling, HIV/AIDS status disclosure, immigration, Iraq, Israel & the Palestinians, Katrina and FEMA response, nuclear proliferation, separation of church and state, standardized testing, stem cell research, tax cuts, voting machines, and many more.. As with the other two, scholarly and academic journals are used, as well as electronic versions of important circulating and reference books. Freshmen will find this resource of great help as they work on their term paper for English 1302. All majors should find some if not all of the topics important to their field.

Nursing Reference Center is a point-of-care reference tool designed to provide relevant clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals, directly at the point-of-care. This databases offers staff nurses, nurse administrators, nursing students, nurse faculty, and hospital librarians the best available and most recent clinical evidence from thousands of full-text documents. Allied Health, Kinesiology, and pre-Med students may also find relevant information within this database.

These databases may also be accessed remotely through the proxy server during the trial period.

March 23rd is Easter Sunday, so the library will not open again for regular service until Monday, March 24th.

Are You A Crossword Puzzle Solver?

You know who you are. You're reading a newspaper, or a magazine, and there it is. A grid with some of the squares blackened out, some of the others with tiny numbers. Then there are the definitions. 1 Across. 37 Down. You grab for the nearest pencil (or maybe you're adventurous and it's a pen) and a compulsion guides you to begin filling in those squares with letters that become words.

Yes. You. Are. A. Crossword. Addict.

Go ahead. Say it. Remember, the first step is admitting you have the problem.

If you are like millions of other people around the world you take great pleasure in filling in those grids with the right letters. Word overlaps word and you sometimes wonder how in the world do these people come up with these puzzles?

Along with the pleasure comes not some measure of frustration when you are missing just one or two letters and neither the definition for 46 down or 52 across helps you. Of course, there are all sorts of crossword dictionaries out there, but now, thanks to the Library's subscription to the Credo Reference database, you have an online help through the Crossword Solver.

It's easy to use. (1) Click on the link; (2) enter your crossword letters in the box; (3) use a question mark (?) in place of unknown letters; or to solve an anagram, enter all the letters.
Examples: pu??le, ma?ic; or itger, parge. Let's put these in and see what we get.

pu??le yielded puddle, purfle, purple and puzzle while ma?ic gives you magic, mafic, malik, manic and matic.

The anagram "itger" can be converted to riget, tiger, tigre, or trieg. "Parge" becomes gaper, grape, pager, perga, or prega.

So break out those crossword puzzle books or open the newspaper to the puzzle section - and keep the computer nearby!

More Information on Illegal Immigration

This week we've had two University chapels devoted to the subject of illegal immigration. On Monday we heard from our U.S. Representative regarding the government position and on Wednesday we heard from a Baptist General Convention of Texas representative and how to minister to illegal immigrants within the law.

The library has many resources on this and related topics and for good basic pro-con information we suggest you look at CQResearcher, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, and TOPICsearch. Additional information will be found in almost all of the other electronic resources listed on the library's web site.

From CQResearcher you'll find several reports, including the recent "Immigration Debate" (2/1/2008). You can also track this and related topics back to 1992 including "Real ID" (5/4/2007); "Illegal Immigration" (5/6/2005); "Debate Over Immigration" (7/14/2000); "The New Immigrants" (1/24/1997); "Cracking Down on Immigration" (2/3/1995); "Immigration Reform" (9/24/1993); and "Illegal Immigration" (4/24/1992). Additional reports can be found under the topics Immigration and Naturalization and Outsourcing and Immigration.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center includes the electronic version of the famous "Opposing Viewpoints" series of books (which the library also carries). In addition there are reference materials, articles, news stories, and more - you can either search for your topic, or pick the subject "Illegal immigration" on the popular topics list found on the front page. In addition OVRC includes a critical thinking component that will give you even more information.

TOPICsearch is part of the EBSCOhost family of databases. Again, you can either search for your topic or choose from a current events or topics list on the search page - in this case choose the topic "immigration" and it will return citations for periodicals, newspapers, book reviews, government documents, and opinions.

Don't forget to consult other databases such as Academic Search Complete, JSTOR, SocINDEX, Education Research Complete, Health Source: Nursing/Academic, etc. for even more information on this and other topics.

Spotlight on: FAITS (Faulkner Advisory for Information Technology Studies)

FAITS is an electronic resource that offers reports, vendor directories and a glossary related to the study of Information Technology (IT). Although students majoring in Management of Information Systems (MIS) might have the more obvious need for FAITS it's actually a useful tool for a variety of disciplines.

All business students will find the product and company profiles of use in many of their classes. Education students will find interesting reports related to technology and the classroom. Perhaps you are researching technology in area of healthcare - FAITS is one place to get information on this very topic as it relates to healthcare facilities security, patient monitoring, and the pharmacy industry, and more. Other students might be researching privacy versus governmental identification via iris scan, RFID technology and smart ID cards - FAITS can help you!

If you would like some comparison information on products you can also find that information in FAITS, as well a profiles on IT companies.

You may browse the FAITS database by subject are, report type, or quickly search the entire database by keyword. Reports are listed by relevancy to the search and contain summaries to help you determine if they fit your information need.

Report types include tutorials, standards, marketplace information, directories, implementation, selection guides, products, glossaries, company profiles, guide to Internet research, and the information advisor. Additional links to information found outside of FAITS can also be found at the bottom of the main page.

FAITS can help students prepare for exams, oral presentations, and in-class discussions; organize research and prepare content-rich term papers; learn about emerging technologies and their impact on business and society; and get to know the leading players in the IT industry - a big help if you're planning an interview for an internship or a job interview!

Meet the Library Student Assistants for Spring 2008

Each semester Jarrett Library employs many student workers and Spring 2008 is no different. Twenty students currently work in the library in the Access Services Department (checking in and out materials, shelving, etc.), in the Reference Services Department (directing students to correct materials, answering reference questions, etc.), the Technical Services Department (adding spine labels to books, checking in periodicals, etc.) or Library Administration (assisting the Director in the archives, collection development, and other projects).

Of course, all student workers are expected to be serious, quiet and always professional.

Okay, maybe not but the student assistants do work hard and they are invaluable in keeping the library going.

"Could we run the library without our student workers? Absolutely not," stated Cynthia Peterson, Director of Library Services. "Student workers do many things that are essential to the smooth running of the library and as a result they free up the fulltime staff to work on other matters. One example is getting the books reshelved - if we had to spend our time shelving books we couldn't be at the desk to check out materials, or behind the scenes cataloging and processing materials. Our services would be greatly curtailed, as would our hours just due to that one activity."

New Duplex Printer

Many of you have noticed that IT has installed a new printer in the library. Not only is this printer faster, but it prints pages on both sides, thus saving paper.

The duplex printing is the default setting, but if you are turning in a paper that needs the content printed on one side only there is a way to set it up before hitting that print key. Computer monitors are available in the library to assist you with this - or if you can't find one inquire at the circulation desk and we'll find someone to help you.

Spotlight on: Portal to Texas History

This web site, hosted by the University of North Texas Libraries, offers users a digital gateway to the vast collections held in Texas libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and private collections. The digital reproductions include photographs, maps, letters, documents, books, artifacts, and more. It also includes curriculum that applies to the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) standards for use by classroom teachers.

Search on "Marshall, Texas" and you find hundreds of pages of photographs of Marshall buildings and people. You'll also find copies of land grants made in Harrison County as well as other documents related to Marshall or the surrounding areas.

This graphic shows a map drawn by Stephen F. Austin, showing the various land grants and colonies of the early settlement of Texas. Zavala's Grant, DeWitt Colony, and some of the surrounding states and territories can be seen. (Click on the map to see the full-sized image).

In addition to searching by key word, place, or person, you can also browse each county of Texas to see what is available.

All of the information contained in the Portal is considered primary source material by historians, and should be useful in a variety of other fields and disciplines needing interesting information on Texas.

Honors Projects and Library Assistance

If you are a student working on an Honors Project don't forget to come by the library and get set up for research assistance with one of the three librarians. We can assign one of the librarians (or you can choose either Ms. Peterson, Mrs. Ravenell, or Mr. Horton yourself) to assist you throughout the work on your Project - they'll help you get started on your research, assist you in finding materials that aren't available in Jarrett Library, and be a listening post if you need it! We'll be there from the beginning until the day you turn in the Project - as long as you need assistance.

Honors students can also request a change in their patron status and we also suggest a TexShare card, which will allow you to check out materials from other Texas libraries (academic and public) that also participate in the TexShare card program.

Getting to Electronic Resources from Off-Network

The library's electronic resources are valuable and necessary for your academic career, but there is a restriction on usage based on the campus network IP addresses. So what do you do when you use Go Zoe, or if you are off-campus and trying to access a database from the ISP you have at home?

The answer is remote access through the library's proxy server. The proxy server was set up several years ago to assist students, faculty and staff who wished to use databases even when off-campus. And now Go Zoe users have the same access.

Previously you had to go to the remote access link and login. You were then given a list of databases or database vendors (such as EBSCOhost) but you had to know which database was where. Fortunately, this past Fall you no longer have to go to that menu - simply find the electronic resource you wish to use from either the title or subject lists, then click on the resource that you wish to use and a login screen will pop up. Login the same way you would for email or toolbox or any other network application. The proxy server will then send you directly to the database you requested.

Black History Month Display: The Buffalo Soldiers

February is Black History Month and Jarrett Library has put up its annual display. This year the theme deals with the "Buffalo Soldiers."

The "Buffalo Soldiers" were one of the first six all African American Army regiments created by Congress in 1866. Four of the regiments were infantry and two were cavalry. Cheyenne warriors, out of respect for the fighting abilities, gave the 10th Cavalry the nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" in 1867. Eventually all African American soldiers were referred to as "Buffalo Soldiers."

The "Buffalo Soldiers" were sent to the outposts that were the furthest from civilization in areas where the weather and terrain were quite harsh. Mexican revolutionaries, outlaws, comancheros, cattle rustlers, and hostile Native Americans were just a few of the groups they were sent to subdue and/or fight. They also carried out many activities that allowed the west to be settled - mapping of the west, stringing telegraph wires and establishing outposts further and further west.

All "Buffalo Soldiers" were part of the Indian Wars while some pursued "Billy the Kid" or Pancho Villa. They were part of major fighting in the Spanish American War and during the 20th century they continued to serve in the Philippines, China and both World Wars.

Union University

Our prayers go out to the students of Union University, another Baptist school located in Jackson, Tennessee. Union University was hit by a tornado on February 5th, and approximately 80% of their dorms were rendered destroyed or unihabitable. In addition several classroom buildings and the administration building were damaged.

We praise God that no deaths were reported among the students and none of the injuries were life-threatening. We prayer for the swift recovery of those who were hurt, and that Union recovers from the damage quickly.

Great Information Hunt

The second annual "Great Information Hunt" recently ended, with the drawing for prizes being held on Friday, February 2nd.

The "Great Information Hunt" is a fun event hosted annually by Jarrett Library. It allows students to become more familiar with their library and library staff. After students complete a short information hunt form, their names were entered into the drawing for prizes. Those prizes went to the following students:

3rd prize: Katy Chalker
